Hangin' with the locals

When I went to bed last night, I had no plans today.  I was looking forward to a nice relaxing day, maybe a walk to the grocery store, definitely a trip to the beach.  I was excited about finally enjoying my surroundings.  Hard to believe I have been here almost two weeks already and running around the entire time!

So I woke up nice and early - perfect I thought, I'll get my grocery shopping out of the way, then spend the rest of the day at the beach - walking, reading, napping, etc.  Sounded pretty wonderful (as my cousin Dan said, "think Corona commercial").  I decided to check my email just before I left ... and there it was ... a response to a Jeep Wrangler for sale!  I had been anxiously awaiting a reply from the seller.  I have had my heart set on getting a Jeep since I planned my move down here - of course there are plenty of Jeeps around the island; I just haven't had any luck finding one for sale.  I wanted to call immediately, thinking that since I had nothing else going on, I would definitely plan my day around checking out this Jeep.  I didn't want to call too early (this was 7:45 on a Saturday), but given she had replied at 7:30, I assumed she was awake.  I waited until 8 to call (in the meantime, I got the exciting news from Shelby that US Air has started offering non-stop flights between CLT and STX ... I love that we have single-handedly increased demand!!).  Talk about two exciting pieces of news to start the day!

I called Gerri about the Jeep, and luckily she was free all morning.  Perfect, I said - me too!  I told her I'd be there around 10.  Now at this point it doesn't sound like anything might get in the way of this little excursion, but I didn't have a ride!!!  Great - I finally found the vehicle I've been looking for, but I have no way to get there!  I called my landlord to see how reliable getting a taxi or taking the bus would be.  I thought about calling the car rental agency to ask about a last minute day rental.  I also sent a text to my friend Kirby, hoping I was not waking her up on a Saturday morning.  Kirby and Andy are staying just down the road while they are doing work to their house closer to the East end (where Gerri also lives).  And just as luck would have it, Kirby called and said they were actually on their way to the house and would be happy to give me a ride - WOW, talk about perfect timing!

So we met Gerri, I test drove the Jeep and it didn't take long to decide it was exactly what I was looking for.  I didn't want to keep Kirby and Andy from their work, so I told them I would find a way home (ideally in the Jeep), since they had been so gracious in getting me one way.  Gerri and I made our deal, but she needed the Jeep until Thursday.  Okay, no problem - I brought my book and some sunscreen with me, so I would just hang out on the East end beaches since I hadn't spent any time there yet and I was planning to read and relax anyway.  In the meantime, Kirby called to say that I must have just missed her mom, who was driving from the East to West end.  Ironically, she asked what my dad's name was - her mom went to elementary school with a guy named Chuck Grant - also my uncle's name (though not the same person)!

Gerri dropped me off at the Buccaneer - one of the top resorts on the island.  I walked down to the beach which was lined with palm trees and lounge chairs - perfect!  I sat down and read for about an hour - now this is how I had intended to spend the day!  And then it started raining ... and raining.  Luckily there was a beachside cafe that all of us hung out at during the rain ... and I ended up ordering lunch considering how long the rain lasted.  At this point I realized I should probably head back - as long as I was away from the apartment, I might as well run some errands.  So here is where my adventure with the local taxis and cabs began.

It was quite easy calling a cab from the Buccaneer - the driver was friendly and helpful, and I had him drop me off at the shopping center.  He then told me where the bus picked up, as it was only $2.50 for the rest of the ride vs $12 taking another taxi.  So far so good.  I walked all around the shopping center as it started to rain again, picked up some things from Kmart, and looked for a grocery store.  None within walking distance (especially in the rain), so I decided just to find the bus stop.  Luckily the folks waiting for the bus were all very friendly in helping make sure I got on the right one ... ironic that the bus was EXACTLY the same as the taxi (except FULL of people - all locals), so I'm not sure how I would have known the difference!  Whatever, anything to save a dollar =)   One of the next stops happened to be a grocery store so I debated whether or not to get out - given that I would still have a bit of a walk home, especially with my hands full of groceries.  What the heck, this first 'bus' seemed so easy, I'm sure the next would be just the same right?

I stocked up at the grocery store (thinking later I probably could have waited on a few of those items until I had my own car) and made my way back to the bus stop.  And waited ... and waited.  I guess this is what people meant about the bus not being the most reliable form of transportation.  Finally it came, so here I was lugging my backpack full of stuff plus bags in both hands.  We then drove into Frederiksted ... at which point was about an hour after I left the grocery store (and I'm guessing it was 10 miles max).  The driver dropped me off about a half-mile from my apartment, and I decided to use the rest of the trip as my exercise for the day, after politely declining multiple offers from a very friendly Raul, who stopped in the middle of the road and insisted to take me home.  So a very interesting experience - one that I'm glad I got to share, but let's just say that I'm more than excited to have my own wheels on Thursday!

Getting ready to head to Kirby and Andy's for a cook-out, then tomorrow sounds like it will be busy as well ... Sunday Funday.  Checking out Rainbow Beach (where they play sand volleyball), then there is supposed to be a huge Halloween bash at Normas - the place with the drinking pig - also where the local musician plays the last Sunday of every month.  Looking forward to the fun ... and I'll find some time to relax later!

Looking Back ...

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.  Proverbs 3:5-6

After months of consideration, lots of hesitation, and most of all prayer, I decided to make a temporary move to the US Virgin Islands. I planned my 'sabbatical' to St Croix from mid-October through at least the end of the year.  I envision two months as a good gauge of time to get a feel for the island and decide from there how long to stay, what to do, etc.  Ideally, I will be down here 6 months and back in Charlotte by next summer.

I've been wanting to move to the Caribbean for two years now.  Okay, back-track four years ... I got married on St John - fell in love with the Virgin Islands then.  Surprisingly everyone involved in the wedding, from the minister to the caterer to the hair stylist, was from the US (pretty much everyone except for the steel drummer, who didn't show up anyway.  He was a month late - nothing like 'island time'!).  I was so intrigued by all of these people who just picked up from the States and moved down - they all said the same thing, that they were done with Corporate America or tired of the hustle and bustle of American culture.  Given the stress I had always put myself under through school, work, etc., I was like "let's go!".  Obviously that never seemed like a realistic option.

So back to two years ago - pretty much from the minute I was single again and going through the most difficult experience of my life - I got rid of everything I owned, moved in with my brother for what was supposed to be two weeks, and basically wanted to be ready to pick up and go as soon as opportunity came knocking.  Well, there was never a knock at the door, but the desire to live in the Caribbean never went out the window.  For two years, I applied for every accounting, audit, and HR job in the Caribbean - I didn't care where or doing what, I just wanted to get out of Charlotte and live in Paradise.  It seems so obvious now that I was just looking for an escape.  I would have completely been running away from the situation and into the unknown.  I would not have had a plan once I left, because I certainly was NOT going back to Charlotte.

And this is where God stepped in.  Amazing how over the past two years, I have been blessed with so many incredible people who have become some of closest friends (and I can't imagine not having them in my life today), my existing friendships only grew stronger, my faith has been restored and is stronger than ever.  There's a reason no jobs ever came available; there's a reason it took a year and a half to sell my house -  I was meant to be in Charlotte to heal and move on.  God knew I wasn't ready to leave.  And now, I've recreated my own life in Charlotte and made it home again - and I know exactly where I'll be going back to.

This spring, I celebrated my official freedom with the opportunity of a lifetime (well, the first of two this year!) in New Zealand, Australia, and Hong Kong.  I was extremely lucky to have friends to visit in each of those amazing places, but I also took some time to myself to reflect, and came back with a change in priorities, new perspectives, and the dedication to be grateful for the life I have and not take anything for granted.

I had spent two years assuming I would find a job to support a move to the Caribbean.  Everything else in my life was moving forward, and I was ready to as well - but now I was at a crossroads.  A big thanks to my brother turned landlord, as those two weeks turned into two years.  During that time, I always considered it a temporary stop, so I never bought a piece of furniture or anything that would make it feel like a permanent move or settling back in.  Seems sad given previous possessions, but it made me simplify.  It also made me mobile - how many other opportunities would I have to be so free to just pick up and move?  And the bigger question was, would I actually move without a job?  Well, obviously anything out of the country was now out of the question.  And then it hit me:  the Virgin Islands, a US territory!  I had spent time on both St Thomas and St John, but for some reason St Croix seemed to intrigue me, as it was considered the 'in between' of the other two islands (St Thomas is very busy and commercialized, while St John is incredibly beautiful, but quiet).  I started doing all sorts of research, and before I knew it, I had friends left and right telling me about their experiences in STX or their friends who lived there, etc.  So knowing I wasn't alone, I felt more comfortable about my upcoming decision.  All signs started to point to yes!

I went through several phases about what to do with work.  Should I (and could I) just up and quit without a back up plan?  Should I ask to work remotely or would that take away from my experience?  I ended up asking for a leave of absence, but it was not approved.  What?!?  It would have been such an easy decision had they said yes - I would just go down and come back after 6 months, then back to reality.  But by them saying no, I was forced to make the biggest decision of my life.  Was I really willing to quit my job and move to the Islands without having anything else set in stone?

I went on social hiatus for the week (which, if you ask my Charlotte friends, is pretty much unheard of) and took a solo trip to the beach that weekend to dig deep, put things in perspective, and really think through all of this that had been on my mind and in my heart for two years.  I came back from the trip with the feeling that even though I knew it was crazy, I had peace and comfort that it would be okay - that it was something I needed to do.  I still don't know why, but I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to find out.

I just felt that I would never be ready to settle back down until I embark on this journey (or as I like to say "get out of my system").  I know this is a huge leap of faith.  I agree it is a crazy decision, but one where I have had a lot of time to think through and pray - and a decision I foresee no regrets. I believe the opportunity to make this move hadn't come until now because I needed to be in a place in life where I wasn't leaving to run away, but instead have never been happier with life and truly am grateful to be able to fulfill this dream.

So here I am, living in the Islands with a view of the Caribbean from every window, knowing this is an experience I will always cherish, a decision I will never regret, and the faith that it will all work out.  It is amazing to think that I came out of the worst experience of my life as a better, stronger, happier, and more positive person than I could have ever imagined possible.  I’m excited to finally put my faith first and know that God has a plan.  I don’t know where life is going to take me, but I am excited to follow His path and find out.  It's been a pretty good trip so far ...

Random ...

It takes 205 195 steps to get from my front door to the beach (I recounted today - twice.  Must have taken short steps my first trip.  It's actually 150 steps from my apartment building to the sand, but add another 45 for the walk around my building and up the stairs).

Pizza cutters also serve as good bottle openers (thanks Jen).

I have to keep ALL of my food in the fridge - including chips, cereal, etc.

I am told to be thankful for the (loud) chickens - they eat the centipedes.

I am extremely thankful for the mongoose - no snakes!!!

Don't think I'll need my hair dryer, curling iron, or make-up for the next few months.

Got my first two pieces of mail today - thanks to the Preslars and my brother (though I had to remind Nick that just because we drive on the opposite side of the road doesn't mean that he has to put the stamp and return address on the opposite side of the envelope)!

Missed having Jen as my navigator tonight - my first solo experience driving around the island.  Thanks to Lisa for picking up her phone all 7 times; thanks to Jeff for coming to get me; thanks to both of them for keeping Chris, the rental car owner, company while I was still trying to find my way!

Bingo on the beach every other Tuesday night - love it!

Pulled pork sandwich had a hint of citrus in the sauce - very good.

Anxious to try out the fresh limes from Lisa and Jeff.

To do list:  hiking to the tide pool, moonlight kayaking, and maybe even scuba diving!

Week 1

Hard to believe it's been a week already!  I have absolutely loved every minute of it ... okay, there are funny stories here and there, plenty of changes to adapt to, etc., but it really is amazing that I haven't had any reservations, hesitations, or thoughts that this was the wrong decision.  It hasn't even felt like vacation.  It has just felt right ...

Jen and I had a great weekend - busy!!  Poor girl, one of the last times she visited me in Charlotte, we ran a 1/2 marathon and she helped me move.  This time, we spent 10 hours each day touring the island and were exhausted by the time we got home.  I really owe her a relaxing vacation!!

Started off Saturday with a delicious Ghirardelli frappe (just as good as a Starbucks fix!) for breakfast at a cute little place called Polly’s on the Pier, hit the beach, then drove to the other town on the island, Christiansted, in search of a jeep and lunch – we were successful with the latter.  I had originally convinced myself that I would be okay with a stick shift again, but after some of the intersections we went through and having to turn right crossing into traffic, I quickly realized that getting used to driving a stick AND getting used to driving on the left side of the road were just too much!  Luckily this jeep only had the hard top and not a soft top - so not quite what I was looking for anyway (go figure, that has been the only available jeep I’ve found so far – seems they are sold the minute they are advertised).  For those of you betting I would end up with a Vespa … not on these roads!  We were lucky our little rental car made it up some of those hills.  Hit the North Shore to watch another amazing sunset and had a fun dinner with a server and bartender from Missouri … fellow Cardinals fans!

Sunday we got up and went for a run - I think that had to be the most difficult two miles I have ever run - wow it's hot here, even early in the morning!  Drove from my apartment on the west end to the eastern most point of the US in exactly one hour - the time it took to listen to the Kenny Chesney “Be As You Are” cd.  We then found the one sports bar on the island that has the NFL package so we could watch the 49ers/Panthers game.  Jen and I have been to a game every year since 2000 (9 – 49ers, 1 – Panthers/ Rams), so in finding a place to watch it, we still considered this our “annual Niners trip”.  At least their loss was to the Panthers, my other hometown team, and of course I’ve gotta represent for the Tailgate Rescue Crew!  (Hated I missed the slam dunk contest at this week’s tailgate – love the pics and youtube videos!)  Unfortunately we missed the beer-drinking pig (though I promise a full report when I make it), but had my first experience at the local Kmart.  Ended up in the middle of a couple of political parades and a street fair on the way home – Sundays seem to be quite festive around here.

Got up bright and early today to get Jen back to the airport, then as I was sitting on my balcony working, I looked up and saw a cruise ship docked in my “front yard” – now that’s something you don’t see every day!  Other than taking an SUV for a test drive (think I’ll hold out for that Jeep!), tonight has been the first night that I haven’t had plans since I’ve been here.  I laughed when both BK and Dport told me today, “Just try not to burn yourself out!.....not typically something I would expect to say to someone living in the Caribbean” and “YOU HAVE TO RELAX”.

Excited for what week 2 has to bring!

TGIF!

Seriously!  It's been a crazy busy week at work!  Many of you have asked what I've been doing with all of my time in the islands ... so far, feels like I'm still living my Charlotte lifestyle - busy at work all day, then going out with friends at night ... just with a better view!

I made it to the airport yesterday in my first attempt driving on the left - thanks to a GPS, map, and directions from my rental car friend.  Missed the turn for the 'scenic route' (which later came to find out is just a bunch of shops, but now I know where Kmart is!), so I ended up on the highway - was a little nervous at first, but then when I passed a guy walking his horse down the middle of the lanes, I was more comfortable that this would not be quite like our highways back home.  Jen made it safe and sound and has been an awesome co-pilot since.  We are still trying to learn the rules of the road, considering not quite sure our right of way rules exist the same around here?!?  So excited to have her be my first visitor!!

We met up with Kirby and Andy last night for trivia at Rhythms.  Had so much fun even though I didn't know any of the answers - guess I'll need to brush up on my Trivial Pursuit questions.  Love the food here - had the Maui Waui (a recommendation of Jeff) - grilled ham, cheese and pineapple sandwich with a side of coconut curry chick peas.  Delish!  Of course the fruity drinks were just as delicious ... (and I'm sure the dog who got a Guiness for his 21st birthday would say the same!  Which also reminds me that we need to check out the bar famous for the drinking pig - now that's my type of place!)

This morning Jen went for an 8 mile run ... came back half way for a water break (though she should have just jumped in the Caribbean, like the guy she saw bathing his horse!).  Guess it's a little warmer down here than in Peoria.  She got called out by one of the locals who said to her "Hola, white girl"!  Then we walked to lunch and were greeted by other folks hanging out at the fish market - we appreciated the "hey beautiful" comment, but then someone followed up with "she's gotta big butt!"  Okay, NOT what I want to hear on my way to lunch!

After work we hit up the Cruzan Rum factory for tour and 'samples' ... let's just say that the mixers cost more than than the rum down here!  Then met up with Lisa and Jeff at Coconuts - great little hangout, awesome sunset, met lots of cool people (including the trivia champions from last night at Rhythms), as well as the owners from Texas - sounds like they serve up quite the BBQ on Sundays!

Tomorrow's projects:  celebrate Jen's birthday, tour around the island, and put up the hammock!

Liquid Sunshine

Ah ... the rain.  Usually on any Caribbean vacation where there is rain in the forecast, you can pretty much guarantee that it will rain for about 10 minutes in the afternoon, cool things off, and be done for the day.  "Liquid sunshine" as they call it around here.  So I enjoyed the mid-day shower and decided as soon as it cleared up to walk back to the post office and open a PO Box - at least that part was a success!  I left the apartment and it started sprinkling - for a split second I thought about turning around and grabbing my umbrella, but the 20 minute rain had already come and gone, so surely it had passed, right?!?  Plus as warm as it is down here, the light mist was very refreshing ... so I continued on my way.  Made it to the post office after getting rained on here and there - oh well, nothing I was worried about.  But then as I was standing in line, I looked out the window and it just started pouring ... and pouring ... and not stopping!  Of course I didn't have time to wait it out since I had to get back for a meeting ... so I made a mad dash for the apartment.  Granted, this is a good 10 minute walk!  By the time I got home - completely soaked - I mean drenched - I hopped in the shower, got back to my computer - and of course by then the sun had come back out, stopped raining, and even my meeting was canceled.  It continued to rain on and off the rest of the afternoon, so I can at least say it wasn't just during my one trip out of the apartment.  And once it did stop raining, I think my neighbor spent the rest of the afternoon mowing his entire lawn with a weed whacker!

Had so much fun at dinner tonight with Kirby and Andy!  Kirby's mom Kim was one of the first people I "met" while researching places to live in STX.  Kim has a beautiful apartment for rent on the East End.  Her blog said she was a realtor from Atlanta, so when I told her I was from Charlotte, her response was that she grew up in Rock Hill!  Then her daughter Kirby moved down this summer after spending the last few years in Australia - grew up in Atlanta, went to school in Greenville and spent a lot of time in CLT - what a small world ... love it!  Her boyfriend Andy is from Australia - ah, missed that accent after my vacation there earlier this year!  Kirby and Andy are fabulous - I felt like I met half of the town tonight at the Lost Dog (and great pizza!  Lisa/Jeff - luckily we didn't have the wait like you experienced!).  Great having connections already!

Jen Schaefer is flying in from Peoria tomorrow!  SO excited to see her!  And anxious to explore the rest of the island with her this weekend.  Looking forward to having a car ... though a little nervous to drive for the first time on the left side of the road (as Jeff told me last night, "keep your ass in the grass" - reminding drivers to be closest to the side of the road).  Wish me luck!!!  And thanks to Andy and Kirby for the GPS with pre-programmed island points of interest!  Hope to see them tomorrow for trivia, Friday at Coconuts (with Lisa and Jeff), and Sunday at Sharkeys for some football!!

Day 2

Felt like just another day in the office ... okay, not really.  Work was actually very busy, but the view made it worth it.  I seriously had to ask myself more than once today, "Is the water really that blue?!?"  For those of you asking about work, the Bank asked me to stay on an additional three weeks ... and I said I would be happy to, as long as it could be remotely =)   It's actually a nice transition to start with a routine, chat with co-workers, another paycheck, etc.

My final piece of luggage arrived!  Funny when the airline called and asked for directions ... ummmmmm ... you're talking to the most directionally challenged person in the world who just stepped off a plane to a place she's never been and hasn't done anything but walk a few blocks in each direction?  Luckily he found me - and I definitely got my workout in lugging an 80 pound suitcase up a gravel driveway and flight of stairs (and yes, I did realize after getting unpacked that I probably could have managed without half of those clothes!).  Apartment is great so far - can't beat a view of the Caribbean from my shower.  My landlord dropped off a new beach chair, then introduced me to another neighbor - from Chicago, of course!

Everyone I have met so far is incredibly friendly.  I am enjoying how they call you beautiful, even while sweating, hair pulled up, and no make up!  I went for a walk around town today over my lunch hour - hit the post office, library, and of course my first bakery ... the coconut pastries are amazing!!  Granted, this will probably be my first and last day leaving the apartment without sunscreen!

Finally met Lisa and Jeff tonight - so lucky to have them here!!!  Was great getting to know them over the fresh catch and Cruzans Rum (this is sounding familiar).  I definitely appreciated them driving me around and pointing out some of the local hot spots - can't wait to go to the next round of donkey races!  Enjoyed hearing about their scuba diving adventures.  Ironically, I took several pictures of Jeff's boat today as it looked so picturesque sitting there in the sea.  Look forward to spending lots more time with my new friends!

Interesting notes from my family - my mom found out that there is another Jennifer Grant on the island, and my brother found non-stop flights to/from Charlotte that run every other Saturday.  Of course the Cape Air experience was truly an experience, but just keeping you posted of other options!

And just when I almost forgot to write about my sleepless night ... remember that episode from Seinfeld where Elaine lost her voice yelling "SHUTTTTT UPPPPP" at the dogs?  Sounds familiar ... then this morning the chickens/roosters weren't afraid to wake me up nice and early.  And JUST as I typed this, the announcer from the baseball game said 'yadda yadda yadda' (for those of you who got all three Seinfeld references).  I'll sign off on that note ... and let's hope I don't have to unmute my phone on any work conference calls!

The Journey Begins ...

Today I landed in St Croix in the US Virgin Islands.  Will fill you in on the background of how and why I got here later, but didn't want my first day to pass by without capturing some of my initial thoughts and feelings ...

I made it down just fine, but not before shedding a few tears.  Shelby thought it was funny that I cried at the airport with her, yet gave my brother a high five and a "see ya later".  He's just happy to have me move out after what was supposed to be 2 weeks turned into 2 years!

Flight to San Juan was easy, then I anxiously awaited the connection to St Croix on Cape Air.  Of course I was joking when I mentioned that I hope they had room on the plane for my luggage ... should I have been nervous or offended when they asked how much I weigh, not to mention the suitcases?!?  It's a shame they had to put my carry-on bag in the WING of the plane (yes, that is not a typo), so unfortunately I did not have my camera handy (not to take a picture of the look on my face upon boarding the 10-seat puddle jumper - by weight per person!), but the aerial view of St Croix was seriously the stuff on postcards.  Can't believe the first view of my new home was from the air!  And hopefully that last suitcase makes it here eventually ...

I am so thankful for all of the connections already.  In typical Charlotte small world fashion, I met a guy at the airport who met my friend Kristen last year when she was down here buying a house.  Our mutual friend Ruth virtually introduced us - I've certainly appreciated Kristen's insight (thanks especially for the 'morning and 'afternoon way to address folks!).  Look forward to meeting her in person when she comes back for Thanksgiving (and please let me know if you need me to keep an eye on your Jeep in the meantime!).  Tomorrow I am having dinner with Shelby's friends Lisa and Jeff, who moved here in April and have been extremely helpful answering my million questions all summer - super excited to finally meet them.  Wednesday I am meeting another friend Kirby - whose family is from the Charlotte area - and just moved here this summer after spending some time in Australia.  She has been awesome in helping me find a place to live!  I was originally hoping to make a day trip to visit my friends Meredith and Scott who are vacationing from Charlotte in St John - maybe they will run into the three guys from Raleigh who are moving to St John this week too.  This island is going to be really small at this pace!

Apartment is great - nice and cozy, but it's all I need and conveniently fully furnished.  My landlord Michele is from Valdosta, GA (also home of JD Drew!).  She worked in DC for 20 years and moved down here 4 years ago as a dive instructor ... and of course she just met Jeff (fellow instructor) last week!  Michele was nice enough to pick me up from airport and offered to make a pitstop at the grocery store.  I was surprised to find a similar selection and variety of items as any store back home ... with the exception that I was able to find Ben and Jerrys Oatmeal Cookie Chunk!  Seriously?!?  They haven't sold it in a CLT grocery store for years (as many of you recall the buyout 'incident'), and I always have to go to an actual scoop shop for my chunk fix!

Walked down the beach for dinner - delicious shrimp salad and they sure don't mess around with the rum punch down here!  I've decided the perfume of choice down here will be Off bug spray!

Loving the fact my AT&T service has worked better here and in San Juan than certain spots back in the states - all as part of the national plan, so no international charges.  Well at least let's hope so ... this could be a REALLY expensive phone bill if they were lying!

Internet is obviously up and running.  Will be online tomorrow to start working remotely for the next few weeks.  And too bad it's the Yankees I'm having to listen to tonight (sorry D-port!), but nice to still have the simple comforts of home ... granted I'm sitting on the balcony - love that there is an outlet out here, so you can guarantee I'll be working with a view tomorrow.  Except that I almost just stepped on the biggest bug I've ever seen!!!  Until then...

A few pics from Day 1
