Ah ... the rain. Usually on any Caribbean vacation where there is rain in the forecast, you can pretty much guarantee that it will rain for about 10 minutes in the afternoon, cool things off, and be done for the day. "Liquid sunshine" as they call it around here. So I enjoyed the mid-day shower and decided as soon as it cleared up to walk back to the post office and open a PO Box - at least that part was a success! I left the apartment and it started sprinkling - for a split second I thought about turning around and grabbing my umbrella, but the 20 minute rain had already come and gone, so surely it had passed, right?!? Plus as warm as it is down here, the light mist was very refreshing ... so I continued on my way. Made it to the post office after getting rained on here and there - oh well, nothing I was worried about. But then as I was standing in line, I looked out the window and it just started pouring ... and pouring ... and not stopping! Of course I didn't have time to wait it out since I had to get back for a meeting ... so I made a mad dash for the apartment. Granted, this is a good 10 minute walk! By the time I got home - completely soaked - I mean drenched - I hopped in the shower, got back to my computer - and of course by then the sun had come back out, stopped raining, and even my meeting was canceled. It continued to rain on and off the rest of the afternoon, so I can at least say it wasn't just during my one trip out of the apartment. And once it did stop raining, I think my neighbor spent the rest of the afternoon mowing his entire lawn with a weed whacker!
Had so much fun at dinner tonight with Kirby and Andy! Kirby's mom Kim was one of the first people I "met" while researching places to live in STX. Kim has a beautiful apartment for rent on the East End. Her blog said she was a realtor from Atlanta, so when I told her I was from Charlotte, her response was that she grew up in Rock Hill! Then her daughter Kirby moved down this summer after spending the last few years in Australia - grew up in Atlanta, went to school in Greenville and spent a lot of time in CLT - what a small world ... love it! Her boyfriend Andy is from Australia - ah, missed that accent after my vacation there earlier this year! Kirby and Andy are fabulous - I felt like I met half of the town tonight at the Lost Dog (and great pizza! Lisa/Jeff - luckily we didn't have the wait like you experienced!). Great having connections already!
Jen Schaefer is flying in from Peoria tomorrow! SO excited to see her! And anxious to explore the rest of the island with her this weekend. Looking forward to having a car ... though a little nervous to drive for the first time on the left side of the road (as Jeff told me last night, "keep your ass in the grass" - reminding drivers to be closest to the side of the road). Wish me luck!!! And thanks to Andy and Kirby for the GPS with pre-programmed island points of interest! Hope to see them tomorrow for trivia, Friday at Coconuts (with Lisa and Jeff), and Sunday at Sharkeys for some football!!
I can vouch for the directionally challenged!! Loving your updates!!
